The Just Because 2023 is an expressive 100% Syrah from the Willow Creek District of Paso Robles AVA. Sourced from the Homestead Hill Vineyard and organically farmed, this wine reflects Thibido Winery’s commitment to pushing the boundaries of Syrah while honoring the prestigious terroir of its origin. The hand-picked fruit was harvested September 29, 2023. The carbonic process begins with those pristine clusters of fruit in an anaerobic environment (using CO2 to expunge all oxygen) while native yeasts promote the intracellular fermentation. Autovinification occurs here where the weight of the clusters naturally press the stems and grape skins to contribute to the resulting electric purple hue and pleasing tannins of this wine. The 2023 vintage had a unique, extended nine-week carbonic fermentation — a technique that elevates the wine’s vibrant fruit profile while adding electric hues of color, extracted flavors and draws tannins from the skins and stems. The wine was then aged in 60% new French oak barrels to offer just the right touch of oak, adding layers of complexity without overshadowing the pure character of the grape.
In the glass, this carbonic Syrah reveals a deep purple core and on the edges, transitions to an electric violet hue that almost glows. Lush, berried aromas leap forward on the nose, punctuated by bold notes of ripe blueberries and a hint of cured meat. The palate is dynamic and approachable, unveiling light spice, subtle herbs, green olive, and a touch of graphite, which together create an intriguing and evolving flavor profile. A kiss of oak adds gentle structure and a silky mouthfeel, allowing the wine’s innate freshness and complexity to shine. Youthful and balanced, Just Because 2023 shows Syrah’s versatility and depth. The wine’s pleasing tannins and lingering finish hint at its potential, promising to blossom further with a year or more of cellar time.
